BEAM Fellows

BEAM Fellows

BEAM Fellows connects frosh and sophomores interested in the humanities and sciences to alumni-hosted summer internships!

Our goal is to help students explore the world of work related to the humanities & sciences. If you are an alum interested in hiring, please get in touch with us.

The program, now in its third year, is a partnership between alumni and BEAM, Stanford Career Education, where alumni from diverse industries seek interns for a variety of substantive and engaging work.

Past BEAM Fellows have engaged in internships that developed their skills in:

  • Leadership development by managing projects independently

  • Creative problem-solving

  • Working in small, close-knit teams

  • Communicating with a variety of stakeholders such as clients; co-workers; executives; media

  • Writing for diverse audiences

  • Evaluating content like movie scripts, business plans, and customer data

  • Doing research & analysis

  • Creating and editing professional videos, databases, reports & memos

  • Graphic design & photo editing

In the summer of 2018, 55% of our Fellows identified as first-generation and low-income. We particularly encourage students from these groups to apply to the program.

Here is what our alumni had to say about working with BEAM Fellows in 2017 and 2018:

  • “I am very happy with the current BEAM Fellow, and look forward to supporting your program again in the future.”

  • “We loved having the BEAM Fellow! She had a big impact on our small start-up. We wish she didn’t have to go back to school. She’s been exposed to and has learned a lot!”

  • “Have had a fantastic experience with BEAM to date! Have loved working with Stanford students!”

  • “We were so happy with the Stanford intern we found last summer that we've gone ahead and already posted for next summer.”

  • “[Our intern] was phenomenal. I can't say more positive things about her. She was willing to jump in and also brought new insights."

Stipend Information

Frosh and sophomores hired by alumni can apply for a stipend of up to $5,000 to help cover the cost of travel and living expenses during their summer internship. The stipend process is completed by BEAM, and all interviewing and hiring is at the discretion of the participating employers.

Students may submit a stipend application when they apply to a position. The priority deadline for applications for funding is February 28th, 2019 at 5pm PST. You do not have to have an internship offer to apply. However, you will only receive the stipend (processed to your student account) if you accept an offer from the BEAM Fellows employer.
