A detailed description of expectations and schedule is available here. There is no cost for participation in HAL. All expenses, including site visits, are covered. The program does not offer academic credit; however, the required Designing the Professional class is one unit.
All enrolled PhD students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences within the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford are eligible to apply. Students must also enroll in Designing the Professional (Engr311B).
The program is best suited for students beyond their second year in the PhD program, but we will consider applications from students at all stages of the PhD career.
The HAL program application opens on Monday, November 16, 2020. The application deadline is Tuesday, December 8, 2020, at 5 pm PST. We plan to select 10 Fellows for 2021. All applicants will be notified by Monday, December 14, 2020. The program will commence on the first day of Winter quarter, January 11, 2021.
The online application is HERE. You will be asked to upload a personal statement/cover letter of no more than one page, your CV/resume, and answer 5 short questions to help us shape the program. In addition, you are asked to confirm that you have discussed your participation in HAL with your primary academic advisors, and that you can attend all of the program sessions, including taking the Designing the Professional class (ENGR 311b).
Designing the Professional Class (Engr 311b). Winter Quarter: Wednesdays, 5:30 - 7:20 pm.
Ten HAL-only sessions. Every other Monday, 4:00 - 5:30 pm.
Winter quarter: Jan 11, Jan 25, Feb 8, Feb 22, Mar 9.
Spring quarter: Mar 29, Apr 12, Apr 26, May 10, May 24.
Site visits during April and May. Dates and times TBD.
