Where are you in your career journey?

You may be wondering where to get started in making your post-graduation or summer plans. Your BEAM Humanities and Sciences Career Coaches are ready to help, so know that you are not alone. Read below to identify where you are in the career development process, and discover all of the resources available to you through BEAM and the Stanford community at large.

I am unsure what I want to do.

If this is where you are in your journey, meet with a Career Coach to help you identify your interests, values, and skills. In these appointments you can discuss whether a self-assessment would be beneficial for you.

Another helpful step is to talk with faculty, mentors, family and friends about options that may be a good fit for you. BEAM offers the Stanford Alumni Mentoring program, which is available to all Stanford students. You can find a mentor based on your career and personal interests.

I have ideas, but am not sure how to decide.

One way to begin if you find yourself here is to learn more about your options. A great way to find out more about your ideas is to conduct informational interviews with and connect with Stanford alumni who are in a field, company or role of interest to you. You can find alumni who are ready and willing to help you in the Stanford Alumni Mentoring program. You can also identify alumni via the Alumni Directory or the LinkedIn Alumni Tool

Additionally, you can meet with Industry Specialists in the areas of social impact, creative industries, business, consulting, or finance. Finally, attend career events and fairs to learn about industries and organizations of interest to you.

I know what I want to do, but am unsure how to get there.

If you find yourself at this stage, make sure to update and tailor your resume and cover letter, and have them reviewed by a Career Coach or mentor. Use this recruiting timeline to learn when you need to apply. Search for opportunities in Handshake or attend our career fairs or industry mixers to learn about open positions. Prepare for interviews and practice via a mock interview.
