Stanford Alumni Mentoring (SAM)

Have you heard it’s important to network, but don’t know where to start? Utilize the SAM program to build connections and discover opportunities.

Have Career Questions? Alumni Can Help.

Sometimes it’s difficult to understand what it’s like to work in an industry. It can also be challenging to know where to look for opportunities. In the career exploration or job search process, there can be many questions.

That’s why we host the Stanford Alumni Mentoring (SAM) platform. SAM is a database of over 5,000 alumni from a wide-range of identities, backgrounds, and industries - all of whom want to help you.

Each of these 5,000 alumni have enthusiastically volunteered to be part of this program. Why? Because they are excited to support students with their career journey. These alumni are eager to pass on what they have learned to you, and are happy to engage in career conversations.

Who Will You Connect With? The Choice is Yours.

The SAM platform enables you to browse alumni profiles. Alumni profiles contain helpful details such as industry, identity, and major (think LinkedIn, but just for Stanford). Depending on your needs, you can select from a menu of help topics in each profile, such as job shadowing, mock interviews, a place to stay, and more!

Through SAM you can also join mentoring groups, which are based on identity or industry. Once you’ve joined a group, you can browse alumni member profiles to identify individuals with whom you’d like to connect. All you need to do to initiate contact with an alum is to click the "Message" button on their profile. It’s that simple.

You can decide the length of the mentorship. Sometimes you want to get quick advice on majors, jobs, industries, and more. However, if you feel like you’ve connected with an alum really well, that mentorship can last longer. Be sure to communicate with alumni on how long you would like to keep in touch.

How Do I Get Started With SAM?

First, go to (it’s accessible via Single Sign-on). Create an account and a short profile as a way to introduce yourself to alumni. Next, go to “Explore the Network” where you will find filters to narrow down your profile selections.

We know it can be intimidating to reach out to alumni, so we’ve provided customizable email templates to get the conversation started. All you need to do is hit the “Message” button to find these templates, edit it as you like, and hit send. Remember, these alumni have signed up for SAM because they want to support you in navigating your experience as a Stanford student and beyond!
